The wintering male PINE BUNTING is now more difficult than ever. Thanks to some excellent information from Edward Paxton, I staked out the field junction first and was rewarded with a brief view of the bird feeding with 3 Yellowhammers on the freshly laid straw provided for the ponies in the first paddock on the left as you walk 100 yards north of the farm. It flew out of the paddock and paused briefly in some trackside hawthorns before all four birds flew off in the direction of the farm. A long while later I relocated the bird in full song in isolated bushes bordering Murston Pits but that was it. Incredibly elusive and with temperatures today reaching an incredible 18 degrees centigrade, I will be amazed if it is ever seen again. Only saw 5 Yellowhammers in total today (in five hours of searching) and 3 male Reed Buntings. The constant mewing of Mediterranean Gulls was novel!), 5 Yellowhammer, 3 Reed Bunting [Lee Evans]
